Spring Freeze Injury -2002 (posted by J. Burns, Extension Agronomist, 8/8/02)

Yields of winter wheat in some areas of Washington State were severely reduced by spring freeze injury.  Preliminary yield data shows that lower rainfall regions characterized by earlier maturity dates were the most severely impacted.  Most notable weather patterns were a severe cold period that occurred during from 7-11 May 2002 that resulted in temperatures dropping into the 'teens' in some areas.  In addition, another cold snap on 7 May 2002 caused frost damage to both winter and spring crops.

Linked here (pdf format) is an excellent publication discussing freeze injury to wheat, Spring Freeze Injury to Kansas Wheat. This publication was published by the Ag Experiment Station & Cooperative Extension, Kansas State University.  In addition, 2002 Monthly Weather Reports have recently been posted to the WSU Variety Testing Web site, courtesy of Bob Barry, USDA-ARS Palouse Conservation Farm.
