ANATONE SPRING BARLEY – 2005 WSU VARIETY TESTING DATA
.2005 Spring Barley data from the WSU Variety Testing nursery at the Anatone location averaged 2-tons/acre (4049 lbs), slightly higher than a 3-year historical average of 3700 lbs/ac. This nursery was planted as re-crop following a 2004 winter wheat crop.
.TEST WEIGHT values were excellent for the majority of varieties in this nursery with an average of 52.0 lbs/bu. In general, 6-row varieties had lower test weight values than 2-row varieties which are fairly typical.
.STRIPE RUST infections were observed on susceptible varieties on a 24 June 2005 evaluation. Severity of infections was relatively low and did not appear to have any impact on 2-row varieties. Three 6-row varieties showed fairly high levels of infection (Creel, Morex and Legacy). Each of these varieties had some of the lower yields in the nursery; however, the yield ranking of each of these in 2005 is consistent with previous years – even in the absence of stripe rust.
.In general, variety YIELD RANKINGS were somewhat similar to historical yield rankings; however with high environmental variability in 2005, it is important to look at historical yield performance for this nursery in making variety selections.
